Talking to a priest or confessor about sex

Bringing sexuality into confession or spiritual direction is normal. What to say, how much detail is needed, and why the seal of confession protects you.

Married couple at home, Talking about sex lesson

Many Catholics feel uneasy bringing anything related to sexuality into confession or spiritual direction. They worry about shocking the priest, about not knowing the right words, or about being judged. These worries are understandable, but they often keep people away from grace they need. Priests hear about these matters regularly. Talking about your intimate life with a confessor or spiritual director is normal, and it can bring real peace.

Why bring this to a priest at all

Sexuality is part of our whole life, including our spiritual life (CCC 2332). Questions about family planning, about what is and is not permitted in marriage, about past sins, or about struggles with purity are moral and spiritual questions. The Church offers the sacrament of Penance as a place of mercy, reconciliation, and healing (CCC 1422), and spiritual direction as a place for ongoing guidance. Where the Church has no specific teaching on a particular question, a wise priest can help you form your conscience in the light of the Word of God and the teaching of the Church (CCC 1783, 1785).
