Trust rarely breaks in a single moment, and it is almost never rebuilt in one. After pornography and secrecy have wounded a marriage, both spouses often want to know how long healing will take. There is no fixed timeline. What we can say is that trust grows back the way it grows in the first place: through consistent, honest, visible faithfulness over time.
Why trust takes time
When a spouse discovers hidden pornography use, they learn not only about the behavior but also that their sense of reality was wrong. Things they believed were true were not. That kind of wound makes it hard to believe words alone. The betrayed spouse is not being stubborn when they need evidence over time. They are responding sensibly to what happened.
Marriage is meant to be a faithful, exclusive covenant in which spouses can rest in each other's love (CCC 1643 to 1646). Rebuilding that rest is a gradual process.
